  1. Liability costs were escalating rapidly in Queensland, primarily as a result of the PIPA regime which is classified by most insurers as a “proceeding” and treated like litigation, so it has become very expensive, and the plaintiff lawyers know how to play the system. To counter this we established a cost effective service of managing the majority of claims to compulsory conference in Queensland with our Brisbane staff attending the conferences. This effectively saves our clients the major part of the cost of legal representation to conference, which averages around $10,000 to $15,000 per case. In addition, our Brisbane staff have the expertise and understanding of clients to achieve superior results. As an example, we represented the interests of a cleaner co-respondent to a PIPA claim. Both our client and the property owner contributed equally to a commercial settlement at conference.  However our client did not incur any legal fees for the claim, while the property owner, who retained a law firm at the outset, incurred legal fees of $25,000.
  2. In May 2007 Sue received a property claim for an Insured for extensive graffiti damage to the outer areas of their building. Sue managed to employ the Victorian Government Corrective Services department who, as part of a community service repainted the hall free of charge (with the exception of lunches and drinks). The initial quote for this repainting was in excess of $20,000

We were notified of a 4 month old baby boy who was severely scalded by a cup of tea dropped by an inexperienced waitress at a cafe.  Richard’s son was an identical age at the time so he naturally found this an upsetting notification. Liability was not in issue.  Fortunately, the cafe and parents had responded with the appropriate first aid and the child was treated by Australia’s top plastic surgeon so scarring was minimised.  The incident was investigated as a precaution and the parents were contacted and an offer made to assist them with their expenses as a gesture of goodwill.  Richard subsequently kept in touch and paid for them to receive trauma counselling.  Total pay-out on the claim - $1,800
